If you are looking for a location for your next photography session in Lincoln, Nebraska; Sunken Gardens is a wonderful option. I recently went exploring the area and was so inspired by the possibilities. These images were taken on May 1, 2025- the tulips were on their last leg and new annuals had recently been planted (so a lot of dirt visible). This place is going to be bursting with color in a few weeks.
There are several reasons to love this location for family photography.
It offers a ton of variety for images while not covering a ton of ground. This is perfect for families with children. During my sessions I do pose my families for a traditional portrait, but my favorite is letting them walk around and explore and be themselves. Often times these are the favorite images. Your little ones will love this area because there is not a ton of walking (versus Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha). There are spaces for portraits with flowers, brick backdrops, stairs, and more open areas.
Lush nature without having to walk in buggy/grassy areas. Perfect for the families that want the nature look but maybe a little more refined and elegant. At Sunken Gardens there is no need to walk through grass or even get dirty. There are also benches and stairs that offer great options for photography poses. No need to get up close and personal with dirt.
The sidewalks are gorgeous. Have you ever noticed if you take photographs on concrete sidewalks they look white and distract from the people in the image? You do not get that here at Sunken Gardens. This location offers timeless brick pathways and also has paths with small pebbles more brown in color. This provides great tones for your images.
It is a stunning location. Whether you do your session in the spring time with the tulips and more understated greens or the summer when the gardens are bursting with color- you can be sure that your images are going to be show stoppers. There is nothing like revealing the spectacle of nature alongside your family.
